Tobias Fandel will present reticulation, inspired by the homonymous surface-finishing technique for decorative metal objects. With heat being applied selectively, the alloy beneath the surface metal turns liquid and starts to deform the surface from within. For Fandel, this technique serves as a metaphor for shaping the material of my intervirtual sound activation—since so many things in life can only become visible, after profound change from within has happened. As the sonic starting point, he enters the mode of activation from a generative field of perpetual fluctuation of abstract spatial motions. Fandel seeks to sculpt and expose these aural and spatial malleabilities, inviting the listener into their own moment of reticulation—where subtle energies allow the perception to be warped from within.
MAYSUN will present Folding Spaces, using the room as the main sound source, capturing and reprocessing it to create layers that fold and shift within the space itself. Percussion and additional processing further shape these sounds, resulting in an improvised, octophonics composition that blends contemplative and experimental soundscapes.
About the Artists
Tobias Fandel is a composer and visual artist working with acoustic instruments, video, and digital media, focusing on the aesthetical implications of digital culture. His interests include the reversibility of loss in the virtual, the physicality of computed materials, and various printing methods and technologies. In his recent projects he engages the friction between current and obsolete media technologies, investigating elusive qualities and sensory artifacts across different cultural sensitivities. He has previously collaborated with Ensemble Modern, Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, Meitar Ensemble, Ensemble Mise-En, Soyuz21, PinkNoise Ensemble, Talea Ensemble, Reactive Ensemble among others. Tobias teaches Music at Baruch College and is currently pursuing a PhD at the CUNY Graduate Center under the guidance of Lev Manovich and David Grubbs. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Etienne Mason, known professionally as MAYSUN, is a composer and sound artist known for his unique blend of drumming expertise and sound design, creating immersive atmospheric soundscapes. With a focus on the use of physical space to shape and manipulate sounds, he crafts compositions that serve as soundtracks to his life events. MAYSUN’s work is characterized by an innovative approach that transforms real-life sounds into musical tones, skillfully interweaving the dimensions of time and space within his compositions. His artistic journey is driven by a deep passion for exploring spatial audio, technology and a desire to create meaningful emotional connections through his music. In addition to his artistic pursuits, MAYSUN has been serving on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC) since 2023 and is a proud member of the international artist collective Inland Ocean. He completed the prestigious 2024 ITP/IMA Fellowship at New York University and is currently a mentor at New Inc.
