Off-Axis Listening is a collaboration between MESH_ARTS and New Ear:: SPATIAL, bringing together installations, performances, talks, and a participatory workshop that explore spatial dialogs and perception through the medium of sound. Through experimental sound practices, archival material, and idiosyncratic speaker setups, the program approaches listening as an active, spatial process through which environments are continually produced and shifted.

For Bryce Hackford‘s New Ear:: SPATIAL commission, he will compose a new work at MESH_ARTS directly dealing with moving social, physical and psychological architectures in the Off Axis Listening group exhibition. The sounds and movements will be of, and transforming, experience of this space, and may involve: mediated chain mail, feedback or birds.

Alessia Damiani :: RE::SIDUAL TRUTH (2026) – commission by New Ear. A mixing board fed only into itself. Nothing else. RE::SIDUAL TRUTH is a quadraphonic acousmatic work built entirely from no-input feedback. The brain does not hear: it predicts. Across six phases, the work teaches the listener’s ear to anticipate, then betrays that trust, each time at a deeper layer: the path of a sound, then a newly learned order, then prediction itself, drowned in saturation, then memory. Only a residue survives: the truth no model absorbs. The piece ends in a state where there is nothing left to predict, only something to inhabit.

About the Artists

Bryce Hackford is an artist and composer making “deeply unsettling” (Ted Gordon, CUNY) work across performance and installation with sound and communication systems, busted CDJs, a fake bird, used clothes, familial gifts, aromatic objects and otherwise temporary phenomena. He is currently developing a new body of work referred to at the moment as com positions; compositions involving scores, the audio-visual and movement-based interactive tendencies of Zoom conferences, live venue architectures, musicians, their instruments and laptops. Bryce has performed at MoMA PS1, The New Museum, CBGB and Sunview Luncheonette. His most recent release “Reflections in the Space of No Space”, recorded works disseminated for others’ personal playback rituals, was released via Dinzu Artefacts in 2025.

Alessia Damiani is an Italian sound designer, composer, and multimedia artist working at the intersection of electroacoustic music, generative audiovisual systems, and interactive media art. Her artistic research focuses on digital uncertainty, error-based synthesis, feedback dynamics, and the simulation of biological and perceptual processes. Her compositions, live electronics performances, and peer-reviewed research papers have been featured at major international venues, festivals, and academic conferences, including the Seoul International Computer Music Festival (SCIMF), the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, the Athens Digital Arts Festival, BJCEM/UKYA, Australasian Computer Music Conference (UQ Brisbane), Radiophrenia FM (Glasgow), and Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall. In addition to her solo and collaborative audiovisual works, she actively engages with transmedia art festivals and sound design for contemporary dance and theater. She is also the author of the forthcoming educational volume Il Suono in Rete (ContempoNet, expected Spring 2027). Alongside her creative practice, Damiani has taught across several higher education institutions in Italy and currently teaches Multimedia Systems and Languages at the Milan Conservatory “G. Verdi”
